Zirnasura is an Indian themed Warcraft III Custom Campaign that I built during my spare time. I focused on the RPG elements of the level editor. I was responsible for the entire project. Please continue reading for more details.
I have built a strong story driven campaign structure encompassing 9 maps. The gameplay length of the maps varies from 15 minutes to 50 minutes depending on the plot. The maps included a village, training ground, cave, valley, forts and forests. I conceptualize the setting, characters and the world for the game.
I focused on following aspects of level design:
Level ramp from tutorial to boss fights
Placement of spawn points and patrol routes
Designing the level flow
Placement of props and terrain
DESIGNING AND SCRIPTING INTERESTING AI BEHAVIOR
Using JASS I scripted interesting AI behavior. Since this was in a RPG setting where the player got to control only one protagonist both the enemies and the allies had to be scripted. These included squads of enemies or allies to individual support characters.
BOSS BATTLE DESIGN AND SCRIPTING
The boss battles appeared during the different narrative arcs of the story. The player is usually made to put into practice all that he has learnt up to that point in order to defeat the bosses. The boss would move and use abilities in certain pattern. There would be environmental hazards and minions that would also work in a certain way during the battle to try and stop you.
Design missions balancing the player skill and the in-game ability along with progressing the story.
Since the game revolved around an Indian theme most of the game’s characters had to be re-skinned. I used GIMP in order to re-skin the models. This ensured that the players would immerse even deeper into the world that was created.
The campaign is highly story driven so in-game assets and in-game camera were used to drive the narrative forward.
